Department of Accounting, Auditing and Law

The Department of Accounting, Auditing and Law contributes research-based training and knowledge development within financial management, financial accounting, auditing, business law, taxation, real estate, shipping, banking and insurance and political economy. The Department has primary responsibility for all education within these areas at BI.

The research activity is focused on business law, auditing, accounting regulations/practices and financial management.

Thematically, the research is related to developments in company law in Norway and the EU, stock exchange and securities law, real estate law, labour law and dispute resolution, individual, company and transaction taxation, value added tax, non-profit/public institutions, Norwegian and international accounting law, intellectual capital and knowledge management, executive compensation in unlisted companies, corporate governance and evaluation of exceptions from auditing obligations for smaller companies.

The department has a large course portfolio on the BSc, MSc and Executive levels. The department is responsible for the MSc in accounting and auditing, the MSc in tax law, the BSc in real estate studies, the BSc in auditing and the BSc in economy and company law plus several management programmes in e.g. financial management, auditing, HR and employment law, employment and student law and green growth. The department is also greatly involved in teaching and tutoring for the management programme in school management and “Rektorskolen”, as well as customized programmes in financial management for companies.

Highlights of 2013:

  • Erlend Kvaal was appointed professor of accounting
  • Inge Unneberg was awarded “best lecturer” at Faculty of Law at UiT Arctic University.
  • Espen Skalehanug was awarded “lecturer of the year” by the Norwegian Communication Association.
  • Janicke Rasmussen hosted the 11th European Conference on Internal Audit and Corporate Governance at BI in Nydalen.
